THE BUILDING’S HISTORY

124 West Houston has been an iconic structure from the very beginning.

It was formally owned by the world renowned artists and architects Arakawa & Madeline Gins, husband and wife. They both resided there and turned the space into what is called today, work-live studio. Arakawa’s work can be found all over the world, including The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Museum of Modern Art, Centre Georges Pompidou (Paris), and The National Museum of Arts (Osaka), just to name of few. Together they founded The Reversible Destiny Foundation whose purpose is to expand the human lifespan through the expression of Architecture. Their most well-known project was in 2005, The Reversible Destiny Lofts-Mitaka in Memory of Helen Keller, which was an apartment complex, located in Tokyo, Japan.

But that is not 124 West Houston’s only claim to fame. Bob Dylan had used the ground floor as his own private rehearsal studio in the 70s, where some of his greatest hits were created, such as the song “Idiot Wind” as well as other songs that would make up the album of Blood on the Tracks.
